Portsmouth Chiropractor | Dr. Shawn Shapiro
I watched how our healthcare system made my grandmother sicker...

My grandmother went into the hospital for a mitral valve replacement in 1997; her surgery went fine but her aftercare got her sick! Missed diagnosis, medication errors and apathy on the part of the medical staff, led to her getting worse after the surgery rather than well.
I thought to myself, "there has to be another way to restore dignity to healthcare and improve a person's quality of life, by interacting with a doctor." So I pursued this, and found that our medical system was flawed. It was ultimately based on the premise that everyone who was sick, was somehow missing something.
I started to learn more about vitalism, and about how the body needed to heal itself. That led me to chiropractic, it seemed to me that practiced properly, chiropractic could empower people and restore them to health again, as well as provide a way for their health to improve on a regular basis.
I have always been interested a how the mind relates to the body, I have Bachelors degrees in Human Biology and Psychology. And I got my Doctorate in Chiropractic from Logan University in Chesterfield, Mo. At Logan I was given a fantastic education in clinical diagnosis as well all clinical sciences.
The list of types of problems with which patients come to our practice is staggering: auto-immune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, TMJ problems, headaches, chronic child ear infections, arm and foot pain, allergies, asthma, ADD and ADHD and, of course, back pain. But the truth is I can't legally treat any of those symptoms. In the state of New Hampshire, chiropractors are limited to "...the detection and correction or vertebral subluxation complex or syndrome...." This doesn't mean much to lay-people and why should it?! You have a problem that you want fixed, and you don't need to know how.

My wife Krystn and I spend a lot of time traveling to see our family and friends around the country, we also enjoy being as involved with seacoast community as much as possible. I have served on the Board NESSHA, been a member of Portsmouth Rotary and been involved in my churches fundraising since moving back to NH.
