Dr. Shawn Shapiro, Portsmouth ChiropractorMeet Dr. Shawn Shapiro

I watched how our healthcare system made my grandmother sicker. My grandmother went into the hospital for a mitral valve replacement in 1997. Her surgery went fine, but her aftercare got her sick! A missed diagnosis, medication errors, and apathy on the part of the medical staff led to her getting worse after the surgery rather than better. I thought to myself, “There has to be another way to restore dignity to health care and improve a person’s quality of life, by interacting with a doctor.”

Empowering Patients

While pursuing this concern, I found that our medical system was greatly flawed. It was ultimately based on the premise that everyone who was sick, was somehow missing something.

I started to learn more about vitalism and about how the body needed to heal itself. This inspired me to pursue a career in chiropractic care. I found that when practiced properly, chiropractic care could empower people and restore them to health again. Chiropractic also could provide a way for their health to continuously improve on a regular basis.

Obtaining a Chiropractic Education

I have always been interested in how the mind relates to the body, and earned bachelor’s degrees in human biology and psychology. Then, I earned my Doctor of Chiropractic from Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri. At Logan, I was given a fantastic education in clinical diagnosis as well all clinical sciences.

Here are some of the many types of problems that patients come to our practice with:

  • ADD and ADHD
  • Allergies
  • Arm and foot pain
  • Asthma
  • Autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis
  • Back pain
  • Chronic child ear infections
  • Headaches
  • TMJ

But the truth is I cannot legally treat any of those symptoms. In New Hampshire, chiropractors are limited to “…the detection and correction of vertebral subluxation complex or syndrome….”

Getting to the Root Cause

This doesn’t mean much to lay-people, and why should it?! You have a problem that you want to be fixed, and you don’t need to know how. These conditions are merely symptoms of a greater issue occurring within the nervous system. I aim to find the root of these conditions and build a treatment plan with patients bringing them to the point of stability.

Outside the Office

I spend a lot of time with my kids and their activities.

Always looking to help people, I bring chiropractic care to those who desperately need treatment and may not be able to afford care. One of the ways I give back is visiting Cross Roads House in Portsmouth on a weekly basis.
